Important Notice: New Cell Phone Policy Effective January 6, 2026

For Students and Parents

Miami Valley Career Technology Center is informing families of an important change to student expectations during the school day, in compliance with newly passed state legislation.

Ohio House Bill 96 requires all public school districts to adopt a policy prohibiting student use of personal communication devices during the instructional day by January 1, 2026.

What This Means for MVCTC Students

Effective at the start of the second semester on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, students will not be permitted to use cell phones during the instructional day.

Key Points of the Policy

  • Cell phone use is prohibited from 8:05 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

    • This includes classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and between classes.

  • Smartwatches may be worn, but may not be used for any unauthorized purpose during the instructional day.

  • Cell phone use is permitted only in the following situations:

    • During lunch, once inside the Multipurpose Activity Center (MAC), put away before returning to class

    • While riding in school vehicles

    • When explicitly authorized by staff during instructional time, or school-related events or functions

Disciplinary Consequences

Violations of this policy will result in progressive disciplinary action, which may include:

  • Detention

  • In-School Reassignment

  • Out-of-School Suspension

  • Expulsion

Exceptions for Documented Needs

Students with documented needs, such as those outlined in an IEP, 504 Plan, or medical documentation from a physician, may still access or use their device for their learning or health needs, as documented in the plan.

Students with documented exceptions should contact their MVCTC principal for more information.
